Beautiful lamp commissioned by my friend Patrick Tubajon, proprietor of gorgeous Gudrun Restaurant in Steveston, BC. Steveston is a historic and still operating fishing and cannery village in the mouth of the Fraser River, just half an hour S. of Vancouver. Historically it was a dominantly Japanese-Canadian community until most of the population was interned in WWII and their possessions confiscated in one of the most disgraceful acts in Canadian history.

I heard another architect say lately that the cabin form is the vernacular architecture of British Columbia, and that is probably true. Mark’s cabin approaches the Ur example of that form.

Today I learned that the term dog days is very old, a translation from the latin dies caniculares. It refers to “the hottest, most sultry days of summer in late August.

Vancouver is in the throes of a real estate gold rush. While Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and China have passed legal deterrents such as property speculation taxes on second homes, Vancouver (and all of British Columbia) have not. This has left us open to rampant real estate speculation, largely from buyers in Mainland China who, quite reasonably, want to invest in land and will do it wherever they can escape punitive taxes or other barriers.
