‘Mr. Susan’ in the “Mirror World” – this scene from the BBC’s The Mighty Boosh is a pretty good introduction to this cult BBC TV show. The show, the surreal adventures of two London zookeepers’, features DIY production and costume design that owes a lot to comedian Noel Fielding, one of the show’s two actor/writers.
Wallander, the Swedish detective of Swedish books, TV and film, has now appeared in a BBC remake starring Kenneth Branagh. Shot in Sweden, the BBC remake has a Bergman-like mute bleakness despite the attractive minimalism of (most of) the interiors. The police station is midcentury modern—are there really such police stations in small town Sweden?
Life on Mars, the BBC TV sci-fi police show, takes place in 1973. But it’s a 1973 of the mind, and this is a matter of plot, not just artistic license. The show’s protagonist, a police detective, suffers a serious car accident in the year 2006 and wakes up in the early 70s.
