Custom pendant lamp at Gudrun Restaurant, Steveston

Beautiful lamp commissioned by my friend Patrick Tubajon, proprietor of gorgeous Gudrun Restaurant in Steveston, BC. Steveston is a historic and still operating fishing and cannery village in the mouth of the Fraser River, just half an hour S. of Vancouver. Historically it was a dominantly Japanese-Canadian community until most of the population was interned in WWII and their possessions confiscated in one of the most disgraceful acts in Canadian history.

Playplax by Patrick Rylands

Playplax, another toy from my childhood, was designed in 1966 by the brilliant British industrial designer Patrick Rylands. It’s in the permanent collection of the V&A Museum in London. Thanks to Fraser for actually finding it online, after I failed to (see his comments here).

Coloured plexi beach art installation, Sydney

This sculpture installation of coloured plexiglas by Nicholas Elias takes me back to my 60s/70s childood. It’s part of the Sculpture By The Sea exhibition in Sydney, Australia. I’m a bit annoyed I didn’t do this first, though I wanted to make more of a landscaping or entrance feature. As a child I had a toy that looked a lot like this, made of interlocking coloured plexi squares similar to the interlocking Eames house-of-cards deck.
