Why rocks on the roof?

Pardon my ignorance, but please educate me – is there a non-aesthetic purpose for this, or is it just cool? We don’t have this where I come from. Does it stop water from flowing quickly off the roof, or prevent something from running around up there, or discourage sunbathing, or what does it do, exactly?

I would like a Smithsonian rock collection

I was in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History this past week. My childhood fetish for rock-collecting came back in a rush, and the Minerals and Fossils sections filled me with a deep hankering to build my own rock display. Maybe a bit smaller, and with a less eerie museological lighting—though the spotlit chiaroscuro at the Smithsonian was kind of neat, like something a James Bond villain would have right next to the shark pool.
