West Coast cabin – Clayoquot Sound, B.C.

The cabin is probably the true vernacular architecture of British Columbia’s West Coast and other parts of the Pacific Northwest. Vancouver must once have had some of these buildings, thought rampant demolition and ugly development are doing their best to eradicate any trace of this architectural past. All that’s left of the cabin is the practice of attaching big cedar decks onto the imported Victorian and Edwardian and Britishy styles that sadly crowd the housing stock where I live.

Brutalist Vancouver building that hasn’t dated

Just to prove I don’t hate all tall buildings, this early 1970s brutalist concrete highrise in Vancouver is a long-time favourite of mine, and one that I think has held up really well over the years. It’s known as the 805 Broadway Medical Dental Centre or the Frank Stanzl building.

A classic piece of westcoast modern architecture is back on the market again.West Vancouver—which actually lies north of the rest of the city and on the other side of the harbour—holds most of the city’s best modern architecture.
