This is the Mexico City house and studio of Luis Barragán, considered by many to be the foremost Mexican architect of the 20th century. Built in 1948, the house was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004 and is now a museum. We weren’t allowed to take photographs, which is unfortunate because the photos provided by the museum’s website give an inadequate and even somewhat false impression of the house’s quite amazing interior.

I guess this is ruining the surprise but I’m buying this album for quite a few people for Christmas. It’s ridiculously good, very catchy, it topped fancy local charts, it features internationally known art and music stars, and it’s published by Vancouver’s Or Gallery, one of Vancouver’s best non-profit art centres.

A few years ago architect/builder David Hovey designed and built this house for himself and his family in Winnetka, Illinois, just outside Chicago. Like most of Hovey’s buildings the house is constructed of relatively simple materials, including perforated steel I-beams, and all its parts are designed to be pre-fabricated and then shipped in.

Of course the High Line park didn’t open on time for our New York trip – the first phase now opens June 15 – but at least we got to see all the frantic final activity from our hotel window. UPDATE June 6: This had seemed like a great urban park idea, and it would have made a very beautiful promenade for New York, but as it turns out its use is semi-private.
