Tweed often gets rediscovered by fashion in the fall, but lately it seems to actually be transcending the seasons, probably because it’s at the crossroads of so many of the current nostalgias: the neo-Victorian/Edwardian craze, the 1940s fashion trend, steampunk, the Golden Compass, and a dozen other cultural fixations.

This compelling structure is an example of biomimetic architecture – architecture that mimics biological structures and/or functions. It is part of a project called Metabolic Media whose structures model the molecular structures and energy metabolism in living cells.

Miles of stairs.

Included in this interesting collection is a set of exterior steps on the Greek island of Andros by RC Tech; Roger Tallon’s famous cast aluminum staircase of 1964, now in the MOMA; and a spiral staircase above by SAANA, in the Netherlands.
