I like both approaches, preferably in combination: Anonymous’ no-nonsense takedown of the WBC’s internet presence and cell phones, and Russell Brand’s charming, friendly, tolerant yet devastating mockery of some really obnoxious religious extremists.
Anonymous’ attack was precipitated by Westboro’s stated intention to picket the funerals in Sandy Hook CT, based on their argument that like the deaths of US soldiers in Iraq, the murders were god’s punishment of America for its tolerance of gay sex. In Anonymous’ video announcement it warns the WBC: “Your downfall is underway. Since your one-dimensional thought protocol will conform not to any modern logic, we will not debate, argue, or attempt to reason with you.” Via Forbes. One-dimensional thought protocol! I’ve always enjoyed their use of language.
And then on the other hand there’s Russell asking WBC strongman Tim Phelps for “a cuddle.” As a friend said today, he gave them just enough rope for them to hang themselves with.
Along with the reprieve from corporate hockey this year, these responses to the WBC are being added to my pile of Christmas wishes come true.
I wonder if Anonymous ever considered a DDOS attack on the NRA?
