Geometric mural in the basement of Vancouver City Hall

[UPDATE: I was just informed by the artist’s son Guy that this mural is now threatened, after gracing the lowest floor of City Hall for over 40 years! It’s odd that the City now says it will demolish or paint over the mural, having recently asked Guy and his sister for a bio of their father, suggesting that City Hall had intended to preserve his work.

Everywhere you look in Mexico City, you see something well thought out. Then you come home.

Top, outside a mod bar in the Condesa district; brutalist bank building with relief exterior; art nouveau building in the Roma district; doorway in the Coyoacan neighbourhood; benches in Chapultepec Park; minimalist sans serif address lettering is everywhere; the amazing tiled library at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

Takashi Iwasaki – embroidery art

Takashi Iwasaki‘s March show in Vancouver was postponed, so we’re doing our own little show here. Iwasaki, who was born in Japan and studied in both Japan and Canada, also produces paintings and drawings but it’s his embroideries that are particularly interesting, not just because it’s nice to see embroidery being done by a male artist, but also because of their unconventional, non-fussy style – he somehow bends the medium to make embroidery lines appear loosely hand-painted or drawn, so that there’s an interesting disjunction between method and effect.

A favourite San Francisco live/work loft space. I partly love it for the great painting of the burning ruin—the text at the bottom reads “Monument to Frankenstein.” I can’t find the source of this photo so if anyone knows, please tell me.
