Gift idea: Sun Songs by Slade/Cranfield, published by The Or Gallery

I guess this is ruining the surprise but I’m buying this album for quite a few people for Christmas. It’s ridiculously good, very catchy, it topped fancy local charts, it features internationally known art and music stars, and it’s published by Vancouver’s Or Gallery, one of Vancouver’s best non-profit art centres.

Paris Shoes sold logging boots and ladies shoes to Vancouverites

Paris Shoes at 51 W. Hastings, in Vancouver, possibly 1919. Maybe if shoeboxes still looked this beautifully white you wouldn’t have to have salespeople constantly disappearing into the back. I somehow doubt that the uniform whiteness of this bank of shoe boxes could every happen again, though, and if it did it would be twee rather than pure utility.

My grandfather landed on a Normandy beach on D-Day when he was 35 years old. He was a Canadian officer on loan to a British regiment, so he landed with the British on Sword Beach rather than with the Canadians on Juno.

Hallowe’en is over but this fantastic Japanese raccoon figure survives. I wish it could stay there all winter. It was seen at this cool little bungalow – brick, which is unusual for Vancouver – a block away from the studio.
